About Us
DISCOVER JEWISH CULTURE AND HISTORY
Who We Are
We are the Green Team Youth Association, founded in 2011 in Tulcea County, Romania, currently activating in Galaţi County as well. Apart from the activities we carry out in connection with the environmental protection, starting with 2016 our NGO has become involved in the education of the Romanian youth aiming to expose it to the cultures of the diverse minorities living in Romania. Our purpose is first and foremost that of cultivating a tolerant attitude, free of xenophobia and racism, thus fighting any form of hate speech through knowledge and information.
About the Project
The project “Discover Jewish Culture and History” wishes to promote the cultural values of the Jewish community in Romania and bring them to the fore amongst young Romanian citizens, for the latter to have a broader and more complex image on historical reality and on the way in which the ethnic majority interacts with the minorities and vice versa. Although the presence of the Jewish people in Romania has dramatically dropped since 1930 (451,892 Jews) to the census in 2011 (3,271 Jews), the cultural heritage of this minority and its impact on the Romanian society remain alive and unquestionable.
Therefore, we wish to create a platform for interaction and dialogue among pupils, students, but also for the uninitiated public who is eager to learn more on the subject.
More exactly, we hereby invite pupils and students to publish articles, essays, book reviews, interviews with Jewish personalities or simple people, or research papers on themes which include:
-
Jewish history
-
Jewish culture and civilization
-
Hebrew language, etc.
We will publish these papers online, thus also aiming to arouse interest in this field of study, implicitly introducing pupils and students to the Letters or History Faculties in Romania that have Jewish Studies or Jewish History specializations:
-
In Bucharest: The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest, Bachelor’s Program in Jewish Studies; The Faculty of Letters , University of Bucharest, Master’s Program in Jewish Culture and Civilization.
-
In Cluj-Napoca: The Faculty of Letters, Babeş-Bolyai University, Bachelor’s Program in Hebrew Language and Jewish Studies; The Faculty of History and Philosophy, Babeş-Bolyai University, Master’s Program in Jewish Studies.
-
In Iaşi: The Faculty of History, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, Master’s Program in Jewish History and Hebrew Studies.
